Alexander Gratzer Two birds and two polar bears try to find out why they are so dissatisfied with their current situation and long for a different life. However, these longings are "strictly" guarded by two "capable" soldiers. Cinema Next Why do your characters do and say such bizarre things? Alexander Gratzer When I make a film, I take a lot of time coming up with ideas. Often I do such long circles in the room that I "have" to take a nap, exhausted. The espresso afterwards usually brings the decisive throw. If this idea still isn't whimsical enough, the only and best solution is to simply leave the house and get on a Viennese tram. Cinema Next When did you first start drawing and realise that you had a talent for it? Alexander Gratzer It must have been at the tender age of two; a good time when I was still coming up with whimsical ideas without espresso. Then my parents saved all the drawings from my childhood and youth and had them bound into a book. Looking back, it's funny to see that my penchant for minimalism has obviously hardly changed to this day. Even back then, I preferred to draw only a very small detail, for example an ear, on a large sheet of paper. It's only recently that I've started to think more about image composition and wasting paper. Cinema Next Do comparisons with Loriot's humour and characters flatter or bother you? Alexander Gratzer I don't quite understand the comparison, because Loriot and I are actually quite different. Loriot says, "A life without a pug is possible, but pointless." I, on the other hand, have always been a fan of the dachshund. Cinema Next What is your favourite scene in "Applesauce" and why? Alexander Gratzer The second scene, because a little bird is able to stand up to the guards and their "discipline" for a while, until it finally falls exhausted into its nest and takes a nap. I can identify with this bird. Cinema Next For those who still want to be convinced now: Give a recommendation for your film in one sentence. Alexander Gratzer Whenever I had a crisis in my youth, my parents made me a special, healing applesauce, with which all the problems were blown away and I finally felt ground under my feet again. As the two grow older their relationship becomes more intense and important questions arise. (Synopsis) ‘In The Upper Room’&nbsp; is inspired by a special moment, that I experienced with my blind grandfather, when I was a teenager.Since we lived several hundred kilometers apart, I could visit him only every once in a while. He was a tall, impressive man who loved to tell stories about his life.&nbsp; The 'Vöslauer Opa', as I called him, had been blind for several years. He usually sat in his big armchair listening to jazzy music. For a hobby he was cracking walnuts, which he would then hand over to friends. As a child, I liked to take advantage of Grandpa's blindness every now and then, pulling faces or silently leaving the room with some stolen nuts in my luggage, while he was talking.Later, when I was a teenager, I once sat next to him and asked: "Grandpa, do you ever wonder what I look like?&nbsp; You could touch my hair, if you want!" His answer came promptly and confidently, "I know exactly how you look, Alexander!" It was by then that I realized - Grandpacould see more than I expected.This moment still moves me today and inspired me to develop a story around this memory. It would be a wonderful life, wouldn’t it? The Austrian director, however, seems to suggest we might be mistaken. Two birds, resting in their large nest in a tree, reflect on the disappointments of “being a bird" – their knees drawn up to their chest as little children. "To me the whole thing feels very inauthentic," one mumbles when the other brings up ‘freedom’, the empty concept frequently attributed to birds. "I can't let go of the feeling that I'm just playing a part." Meandering guitar chords on the soundtrack lend the philosophical conversation a certain mystery, while the colorful pencil-drawn animation transports the viewer to fairytale territory. Difficult questions are met with a wandering look – or worse, indifferent whistling and chirping. The director expertly utilizes the single-panel melancholy of Roy Andersson, though, while his characters are just as desperate as those of the meister of deadpan humour, the notes Gratzer hits feel decidedly more Austrian than Nordic. He leads us through three vignettes (birds, humans, polar bears): the bookending chapters marked by a weirdly calming atmosphere that’s nonetheless injected by anxiety, the middle being a droll musical intermezzo. At first glance this comical centerpiece looks to be giving everything away, but there’s more to ‘the joke’ than it seems. Despite the fact that Gratzer doesn’t exactly withhold the punchline, the way everything is set up feels unique and satisfying. ‘Apfelmus’ is therefore a weird little film. One that seems deceptively small conceptually, but manages to capture its audience through its bizarre charm and low-key absurdism. Like in life, questions remain unanswered. Having said that, there might be some solace in the freeing simplicity of preparing apple mousse: “You just have to wash, peel, cut, and mash it. The only movements in an inanimate wasteland: a passing cloud and the graceful dry ballet performed by an animator in front of the deserted pool. So nearly everyone can identify with the anonymous subject of Museum Guard, Alexander Gratzer´s animated film, who turns the exhibition space into his very own stage. Remaining utterly disciplined, at a certain moment he´s nevertheless provoked by just a touch of rebellion and breaks into a feisty "What´s up?" (here sung by Johannes Forster). In this recital only his head and arms are permitted to move, and as custodian of the space he never leaves his station.Likewise, the camera angle remains unchanged, never revealing what sort of museum this might be. Except for the huge gallery sofas, the framing ultimately shows only bare walls, and therefore one might also want to read into this a statement on the museum and gallery business. In this room, austere but drawn askew, the only thing that is actually visible to the viewer is the museum guard himself.With his pointed lips, head tilted for dramatic emphasis, and existence firmly rooted in the mundane, he seems to be a relative of those figures drawn by cartoonist Loriot.
